I’d like to think of myself as the artsy type – without any of the artsy ability. I love the laid back, nonchalant, expressiveness of the art scene. Almost 99% of the time I look at certain pieces (especially in the modern art section of museums) and think “why didn’t I do that?” but as I’ve said, I don’t have the ability for that sort of thing.

I’ve been to the High Museum only 3 times in my life, 2 of which were just this year and I’m honestly ashamed. I’ve completely taken its presence for granted. I dream of days where I can walk around The Met whenever I please, but until that day the High is more than enough. If you’ve been, what are some of your favorite exhibits?

When I shop for clothes, I like to look for brands the people in my circle aren’t wearing or haven’t even heard of. And considering that I grew up in an ultra-conservative, preppy-ish area, a lot of my clothes fit that standard. Dimepiece captured my attention right away because of the carefree, confident, grittiness of their aesthetic. It’s feminine streetwear, which is the vibe that I strive for with my outfits.

Although I do love this dashiki for its afrocentric feel, how comfortable it is, and the pockets, I love it all the more for this reason: Rihanna owns it too. I had bought mine before I saw this vine, so to know that she and I have the same taste makes me feel organically like we’re truly spirit animals.

Motivated by my last post and my intense love for these pants and the foundation they support, I just thought I’d share another example of The Elephant Pants. Here’s a part of their mission statement from their site: “As a corporate sponsor of the African Wildlife Foundation, The Elephant Pants donates a portion of every sale to help prevent elephant poaching.” I love the fact that I can be socially conscious while staying true to my aesthetic.

Side story: One time a girl asked me where I got my pants from and I simply said “The Elephant Pants” and she thought I was being sarcastic. She didn’t take that too well, so now I always go into detail saying “There’s a store called The Elephant Pants…” so that no one gets offended.

I’d like to consider myself a city girl. Emphasis on I’d like to, because realistically I grew up in the suburbs. But when you live right on the outskirts of a major city, people tend to forgo the town they’re actually in and claim the city instead. Honestly, would you rather say you’re from Marietta or Atlanta? You just sound so much cooler when you say the latter.

All this to say, although it’s not as big and bustling as ATL, Birmingham is a cute place that fulfills my city-girl needs. I’m personally not from here (hence the title) but everyone in my immediate family is, so I’m here quite frequently. I used to hate coming here but now that I’m old enough to actually explore, I have a newfound appreciation for the hipster vibe that is growing in the heart of Alabama. I highly recommend Railroad Park which is in the downtown area of the city. It’s my favorite kind of hang out spot: old and industrial but renovated for a brand new use.

One may ask “Why is she wearing long pants in the south in the middle of the summer?” There’s always a method to my madness. I love these pants so much I have 3 other pairs AND some shorts, and I really don’t plan on stopping. They’re light weight, come in so many different colors and patterns, AND THEY HAVE POCKETS – no one ever cares about the pockets. And I wear them a lot because people lay the compliments heavy and it makes my day every time. But the best thing about these pants over all, is that every time you buy something you’re helping save elephants in the process. Humanitarian and well dressed…truly the best of both worlds.

I’ve meant to start this blog for quite some time.  I’ve always had a knack for writing, a love of dressing well, and a constant need to share information on various forms of social media; so the fact that I have talked myself out of making a blog has been confusing to everyone that knows that I’ve been wanting to do this. I even tried to start this as a project for my AP Language class during my junior year of high school, and even then I couldn’t bring myself to continue.

Throwback to 2014 when I threw this picture together the night before my project was due. But I digress. Younger me had so much self-doubt and anxiety that I thought I wouldn’t have anything to say. And then this week happened: a very low point in emotions for me. People say that depression can bring out the biggest inspirations for you and, honestly, they weren’t wrong. I need to do something that’s just my very own, that I can control, mold, and grow under my own direction. And now I’m in such a good place with myself, I finally feel comfortable sharing everything I want to say.

You could call this a fashion blog, since that will be the main focus. But you’ll also get my experiences with food, weird places I go, my friends, my family, and anything else that comes to my constantly changing mind. More specifically, this is everything I can’t say in 140 characters on twitter. I hope everyone that reads this enjoys this journey like I will. It’s been a long time coming.
